Quinte Model Yacht Club Race Results

We are now racing two fleet, the Soling 1 Meter and the new Mini-12

The following are the weekly racing results as pasted from Don D.'s email summaries.

2003 Spring Series
(Overall Final Results Here)

May 11 The first racing day for 2003 was held at the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club at 1.30 on Tuesday April 29th.
The wind was light in the beginning and more or less from the north, however by the end of the afternoon we had experienced some heavy gusts and the wind had switched leaving us with a downwind start and a fighting tack back on the final leg.

Solings

1 Len Ricco 10.25
2 Peter Brister 15.75
3 Heinz Czychun 23.0
4 Marg Brister 29.0
5 Peter Cox 29.5
6 Norm Strothers 33.0
7 Pat Calnan 38.0

The final Soling race marked another first - three boats locked-up on the first leg, but Peter Cox in the dinghy rescued them so that they could continue...
Quite a race!

Three Solings have a "Love-In" and needed rescuing.

Mini-12
Today marked the first organized race of the new Mini-12 Class. Four members had their Mini-12's ready for racing: Peter Sly, Brian Credico, Terry Doble and Jill Cox - so these are the four who go down in the record books.

Windy downwind start after we had a 180 degree wind shift/

1 Terry Doble 6.75
2 Jill Cox 16.0
3 Brian Credico 16.75
4 Peter Sly 23.0

The four racers with Brian's Mini-12 (#29) having had a slight dismasting in the last race.

May 6: After the first couple of races the rain came - then the wind dropped but the rain quit - then no wind - then light wind - more rain - now heavy rain and no wind. Didn't get all the races we'd like, but enough for counting.
Solings - 5 races completed

1. Len Ricco 10.5
2. Heinz Czychun 15.5
3. Pat Calnan 16.0 tie
3. Norm Struthers 16.0 tie
4. Peter Savidge 16.75

Congratulations to Peter who managed a first and a second on his first day at the races - watch this space.....
Len Ricco - what can I say - old faithful
Heinz go off to a flying start and Pat had a great 2nd and 3rd.
Mini-12's - 4 races completed - all races same finish positions.

1. Terry Doble 3.0
2. Brian Credico 8.0
3. Jill Cox 12.0
4. Peter Sly 16.0

The first three boats seemed to have about the same speed. Better
starts, mark roundings and helming made the difference. Peter's mini 12 did seem a little slower as the
mainsail didn't seem to set right. With the lighter winds the boats did not often make hull speed so tuning and sail set would be more critical.

May 13:We had another great day racing despite threatening weather. We raced 2 successive races for each class and it works out very well - all boats are ready to go and come out quickly - then there's time for adjustments and to heckle the other class. You can learn a lot also by watching the races - it's also quite a bit more social - less stress and time to relax.

Solings:
1. Don Demeza 16.75 pts
2. Len Ricco 17.75
3. Peter Cox 18.25
4. Peter Easterbrook 19.75
5. Heinz Czychun 27
6. Pat Calnan 32
7. Norm Struthers 43

Both Peter Cox and I had a DNF on the first race so you really should have taken this one Len.

Mini 12

1. Terry Doble 7.75 pts
2. Brian Credico 15
3. Peter Sly 15.75
4. Jill Cox 21

Peter has the trim improved on his Mini 12 and there were no boat failures this time

May 20: marked the fourth day of racing for the Spring series - the
half-way point with 4 more days in the series. The winds were high and a very short start line for 10 boats - the wind sometimes favouring a port tack plus a short run to the first mark resulted in a higher than normal number of collisions.
SOLINGS

1. Len Ricco 11.25 pts
2. Heinz Czychun 27.75
3. Peter Cox 31
4. Don Demeza 35 tie
4. Peter Brister 35 tie
5. Peter Easterbrook 40
6. Pat Calnan 42
7. Irmgard Gierl 45 tie
7. Marg Brister 45 tie
8. John Gierl 45.5

Unfortunately, Irmgard's boat had a half inch hole punched in the side - a
rough introduction to the rigours of our sailing environment - the good side
is that the boat did not sink and will live for another day.

MINI-12'S

1. Terry Doble 4.5 pts
2. Brian Credico 14
3. Jill Cox 16
4. Peter Sly 29

Peter Sly's Mini-12 was dismasted - these boats may need a stronger rigging but I'm sure Terry is monitoring the situation. Brian certainly learned that you can't come-about with a mini-12 unless you have lots of speed, therefore don't try to change tack close to a mark or you'll be in irons for quite a while.

Terry won every race but the others were fighting it out until Peter's
dismasting put him out of business - he then took over the scoring - thanks Peter.

May 27: I would say that today was a very satisfying day of racing - the winds were fairly light but strong enough that we managed to finish 12 races in a little over an hour and a half.

I think we are all discovering the fun of watching the other class race -it provides half time for relaxing and counteracts the tension of continuous
racing. Not only that but I have my scoring finished before I leave the
site.

SOLINGS

1 Peter Brister 15.5 pts
2. Peter Cox 17.25
3. Len Ricco 19.75
4. Peter Easterbrook 24
5. Don Demeza 25
6. Marg Brister 35
7. Heinz Czychun 39
8. Pat Calnan 41
9. Norm Struthers 54

MINI 12's

1. Terry Doble 11.25
2. Brian Credico 14.75 tie
2. Peter Sly 14.75 tie
3. Jill Cox 17.75

The Mini-12's provided great entertainment - note how close the scores are this week - each racer managed a first, a second, a third and a fourth which means that the results in the other four races determined position - very nicely done all

Top of Page

June 3: Very light winds - but we managed to complete all races - a couple of short races - but we experimented, in some of the races, with the Mini-12's taking off a minute ahead of the Solings so that all boats were racing simultaneously - a bit of a problem with the scoring, but worked out OK and is useful when winds are light and races take longer to complete.

Here's some shots of the Soling racers' concentration... Brian took these while waiting for the Mini 12's turn on the course. A change from boat pics!

Don, our race chairman.

Maybe if I hold my mouth this way the Soling will go faster..

Jill, race committee, and Marg.

Peter and Peter (yes we have at least FOUR Peters in QMYC)

Solings
1. Don Demeza 13.25
2. Peter Easterbrook 17.5
3. Pat Calnan 20.75
4. Peter Brister 22.0
5. Peter Cox 25.0
6. Marg Brister 31.0
7. John Pearson 38.0

Mini 12's
1. Terry Doble 8.0
2. Jill Cox 13.5
3. Peter Sly 18.0
4. Brian Credico 19.0

(Brian found out how important it is to re-tune a Mini 12 for very light winds!)

June10: Reasonable winds today and a good time was had by all.

The Soling competition is open for anyone to win. For example, no racer
managed more than one first therefore the firsts were well distributed to
Len Ricco, John Pearson (way to go John - got those sails adjusted now -
tacked higher than my boat), Don Demeza, Peter Easterbrook, Pat Calnan and
Marg Brister. The theory is that if you can manage one first then you can
win them all - - whose theory is that anyway?? - it's called, "looking on
the positive side"

Soling Results:
1. Peter Easterbrook 15.75
2. Len Ricco 25.75 tie
2. Don Demeza 25.75 tie
3. Peter Brister 26.0
4. Pat Calnan 26.75
5. Marg Brister 29.75
6. John Pearson 36.75
7. Norm Struthers 42.0
8. Heinz Czychun 44.0
Mini 12 Results:

1. Terry Doble 8.0
2. Jill Cox 11.75
3. Peter Sly 14.75

June 17: We had another good day at the yacht club - the odd small weed showed up but I think we'll be okay at the same location next week. The water was calm but amazingly there was a pretty consistent breeze so the racing went well - we again put all the boats on the course together for the last two races
Very interesting as the Mini 12's were crossing the finish line just as the
9 Solings were going through in the opposite direction, having completed the triangle - the Mini's, all three of them, were very polite and went around the Solings.

Here's how we did on the last race of the Spring 2003 series:

Solings
1. Len Ricco 18.5
2. Peter Easterbrook 19.75
3. Don Demeza 20.0
4. Marg Brister 24.75
5. Pat Calnan 25.5
6. Peter Brister 26.0
7. Heinz Czychun 39.0
8. John Pearson 46.0
9. Norm Struthers 49.0

Mini-12's

1. Terry Doble 7.0
2. Peter Sly 11.5
3. Jill Cox 16.0

Final Results for 2003 Spring Series

Best 5 race days count - for every day missed in order to have 5 counting days - add the highest score counted for the series, which in this case is 6.0.

Also, remember that the raw points used for each race day are divided by the number of boats racing that day.

Solings: first races April 29th - 8 racing days:

1. LEN RICCO 8.94 pts
2. Peter Easterbrook 11.93
3. Don Demeza 12.14
4. Peter Brister 12.89
5. Peter Cox 15.42
6. Pat Calnan 16.16
7. Heinz Czychun 17.36
8. Marg Brister 18.52
9. Norm Struthers 24.02
10. Peter Savidge 27.35
11. John Pearson 28.01
12. Irmgard Gierl 28.50
13. John Gierl 28.56

Mini-12: World's first Mini-12 series formal club regatta

1. TERRY DOBLE 7.76 - Worlds first, first
2. Brian Credico 17.8 - Worlds first, second
3. Jill Cox 19.24 - Worlds first, third & first lady
4. Peter Sly 20.94 - Worlds first, fourth

2003 Summer Series
June 24: The count was down a bit with 6 Solings and only 2 Mini 12's so the boats raced together - the results seems to prove that they really do go at the same speed but then again with the Mini 12's being so much heavier and stronger - guess what - a Mini 12 managed to punch a hole in the side of a Soling - I guess that is the problem.

Any way everything is repairable so here are the results:

Solings

1. Peter Easterbrook 7.0
2. Len Ricco 14.5
3. Pat Calnan 17.0
4T John Pearson 28.0
4T Norm Struthers 28.0
5. Heinz Czychun 38.0

Congratulations to Peter Easterbrook - Peter has been pushing that first place for a while and managed to take it away today with no less than 4 firsts. Pat was very consistent also with four seconds - nice going.

Mini 12's

1. Terry Doble 7.0
2. Peter Sly 9.5

Brian was away on a sailing holiday (in his full sized boat!) and it was too hot a day for Jill. They'll be there next week!

July 1: We only had 5 Solings and 2 Mini 12's so we all raced together. Interesting to note that the Solings were first in 4 races and the Mini-12's in 2 races - one each for Brian and Peter Sly. The Solings big advantage is their ability to come-about on a dime but the Mini's are a bit faster on course with a good wind.

Soling
1. Don Demeza 8.0 pts
2. Len Ricco 13.5
3. Peter Easterbrook 18.0
4. Heinz Czychun 20.0
5. Norm Struthers 33.0

It really costs you Norm when your boat is unserviceable for four races -that's 24 pts for the four races not sailed

Mini-12's

1. Peter Sly 7.0 pts
2. Brian Credico 9.5

Brian found out how having to take penalty turns and doing early starts really doesn't help your race!

July 8: Today we had a windy day at Don Leslie's cottage on Oak Lake - actually we sailing in front of Bob Leslies cottage next door to try and take advantage of a little shelter - that gave us a diving raft in the middle of the up wind leg - decision - which side of the raft to take.
We were glad to see our founding Commodore, Ken Douglas on the sidelines. We're keeping up the tradition Ken - you must be pleased.
Solings

1 Don Demeza 8.0 pts
2 Peter Brister 13.5
3 Heinz Czychun 22.0
4 Jill Cox 24.0
5 Peter Easterbrook 29.0
6 Pat Calnan 33.0
7 Marg Brister 39.0
8 Norm Struthers 50.0

Norm is having server problems - a DNS for four races is pretty deadly on the scoreboard

Mini-12's

1. Terry Doble 4.5 pts
2. Peter Sly 12.0

We were all cheering for Peter - Terry also - and you gave us some exciting moments Peter - thanks for that, but a broken boom vang in those high gusts didn't help.

July 14: A good day of sailing at Oak Lake. Welcomed as always by Don and Tommy Leslie - the winds were pretty well directly on shore but with Don's dock sticking directly out into the wind the start line was clear to the judge
although not to the skippers - however - 12 races and no one over early -
how cautious we can be when we can't see the start line.
Solings

1. Peter Brister 11.25 pts
2. Don Demeza 12.5
3. Peter Easterbrook 15.0
4. Heinz Czychun 26.0
5. Jill Cox 27.75
6. Pat Calnan 33.0

Mini-12's
1. Terry Doble 8.25 pts
2. Brian Credico 9.25
3. Peter Sly 17.0

We were cheering pretty hard for Peter Sly and he almost pulled it off three times but then there was that fatal mistake - can't afford mistakes with Terry and Brian, each of whom got three firsts each.

July 22:
We didn't think that we'd manage any races today due to the lack of wind -however - it was a bit fluky but we did manage to complete the full schedule. It was anyone's day - here are the results: And the setting at Don L.'s cottage on Oak Lake was beautiful.
Solings

1. Don Demeza 15.5 pts
2. Jill Cox 16.75
3. Peter Brister 21.75
4. Heinz Czychun 25.75
5. Peter Easterbrook 26.0
6. Marg Brister 27.75
7. Norm Struthers 33.0

Note the similarity of the scores - the kind of a day when everyone moved
around for every race. Norm, for example was 7th but he had a 2nd and a 3rd. Heinz managed the entire spectrum with a 1st and a last - that's the way it goes on a day like today.

Mini-12's

1. Peter Sly 8.25 pts T
1. Brian Credico 8.25 pts T

Peter and Brian alternated first a second - so we end up with 2 boats and 2 firsts - Terry where are you??
Brian had erratic rudder control later diagnosed as a scratchy potentiometer in the transmitter.

July 29: I think we could call today a perfect day for racing - sunny - cumulus cloud and a pretty consistent wind most of the time. I almost missed the racing as my watch was somehow a half hour slow - say the marks were all in and everything was ready to go exactly at 1.30. The usual courteous welcome from Don Leslie and his help to set out and recover the marks.

Solings

1. Peter Brister 13.25
2. Don Demeza 13.5
3. Heinz Czychun 22.75
4T Peter Easterbrook 26.0
4T Pat Calnan 26.0
5. Norm Struthers 29.0
6. John Pearson 38.0

A consistent wind today and as a result a number of our members discovered that their skills have improved considerably, for example:

John Pearson barrelled out with a 4th in the first race Peter Easterbrook had two 2nds and a 3rd Peter Brister just squeezed me out despite a 5th in one race Pat had a 2nd but it should have been a first - Pat was so far out in front she thought she must have missed a leg so kept on going instead of heading for the finish line Norm Struthers had an excellent day with three 3rds in a row - keep it up Norm - just a matter of keeping the boat moving at all times.
I managed an overall 2nd but only because Heinz made a mistake at the final marker and let me past - thanks Heinz - you should have won the first two races instead of just the first.

Mini-12's

1. Terry Doble 7.0
2. Brian Credico 9.5
3. Peter Sly 18.0

I think the Mini-12 sailors will probably sail their Solings for the Fall series so we all have two more race days to hone our skills before the top-dawg's return.

This was the 6th race day of the Summer Series - two to go.

August 5: The winds were very light but the gusts were sufficient for us to complete 12 races.
Soling
1. Don Demeza 10.25 pts
2. Peter Easterbrook 21.5
3. Peter Brister 22.75
4.Tie Pat Calnan 25.0
4.Tie Heinz Czychun 25.0
5. Marg Brister 30.0
6. Norm Struthers 33.0

Mini-12's

1. Terry Doble 7.0 pts
2. Brian Credico 11.5
3. Peter Sly 16.0

During the Fall series these three skippers will be racing their Solings

August 12: Another excellent sailing day at Oak Lake. We welcomed Willy Pullen, a visitor from Ottawa with his Mini-12 and also Norm Struthers introduced his Mini-12 to the water.
There were some fluky winds at the first mark and also weeds are beginning
to show at Oak Lake. The wind was from the north which is off-shore so it
winds around the corner from the east making the first tack a bit variable - have to watch for the opportunities. Thanks to Willy for the photos!
Solings

1. Peter Easterbrook 9.25 pts
2. Don Demeza 10.25
3. Peter Brister 18.0
4. Pat Calnan 21.0
5. Heinz Czychun 34.0

Heinz had winch problems which made it pretty difficult to compete.

Fleet coming up on the mark.

Don shows his rounding technique.

Pat and Peter round.

Mini-12's (with guest included)

1. Brian Credico 10.5 pts
2. Terry Doble 11.25
3. Willy Pullen 16.75
4. Peter Sly 25.0
5. Norm Struthers 26.0

Willi did very well with a first and two 2nds. This was Norm Struthers first try with his mini-12 and I'm sure he found it quite a bit to get used to.

Mini-12's (club members only)

1. Terry Doble 8.0 pts
2. Brian Credico 9.5
3. tie Peter Sly 21.0 tie
3. tie Norm Struthers 21.0 tie

Norm Struthers will not, with only one race, do very well in the Summer series for the Mini 12's but he will be the only club member who will have raced in both the Soling and the Mini-12 series during the Summer. He will
now join the elite group who participated in the worlds first Mini-12 organized race series - there's a silver lining to every cloud Norm..

2003 Summer Series Overall Results

Congratulations to all who sailed in the Summer series from June 24th to
August 12th inclusive - We had a lot of fun so that makes us all winners.
Sailing the Mini-12's and Solings separately 2 races at a time gives us all
a break and a fun time to watch the others make mistakes or find a winning
strategy for the day.

Just as a reminder - here's how we score:

The points recorded for each individual day of racing are divided by the
number of boats racing that day. This makes the score on a per boat basis,
otherwise those who race on a 5 boat day would receive a lower score than
those who sail on a 9 boat day.

This adjusted score is recorded for each of the race days in the series.

There are 8 race days in each series and for each participant we count the 5
lowest scores for the series. If you don't have 5 or more race days then for
the days required to bring your score up to 5 days we give you the highest
score which was counted for the series.

Here are the final results:

Solings

1. Don Demeza 8.04
2. Peter Brister 11.82
3. Peter Easterbrook 12.19

4. Heinz Czychun 17.25
5. Pat Calnan 18.44
6. Jill Cox 22.51
7. Len Ricco 23.87
8. Norm Struthers 24.48
9. Marg Brister 25.63
10. John Pearson 28.9

Mini-12's

1. Terry Doble 12.16 pts
2. Brian Credico 16.59
3. Peter Sly 22.96

4. Norm Struthers 26.57

Trim up for the Fall series as it will be a full Soling turnout - the
Mini-12's are sitting this series out - resting for next year when a few
more boats will be completed.

2003 Fall Series
August 19: It was all Solings racing today but we were missing Terry and Pat so we had 8 boats. The wind was great and in the right direction for a good visibility start line. The results were all over the clock as the odd weed
showed up and there were a number of boat problems - 2 boats locked up and headed for the far shore - Peter Sly and I both had firsts but ended up
locked and ran under the dock for a graceless DNS - Heinz had server
problems and Marg had boat problems. That's all I can remember but it seemed that someone was always in trouble and the results show that.

Congratulations to Norm Struthers - placed well in all races and ended with
a 2nd.

Solings:
1. Brian Credico 16.5 pts
2. Norm Struthers 23.0
3. Don Demeza 23.5
4. Peter Brister 26.0
5. Peter Sly 27.75
6. Heinz Czychun 30.0
7. Peter Easterbrook 37.75
8. Marg Brister 42.0
August 26: Our last day for this year at Oak Lake wasn't too bad - bit difficult to seta start line and one of the markers came apart so Heinz gave it a jury rig.

Terry was adjusting a new boat so that left the field clear for Brian and as
you can see by the points four firsts give a pretty low score.

Congrats to our ladies as they each scored a first - if it wasn't Brian it
was Pat or Marg - very nicely done - just goes to show that it is possible -
great feeling.

John Pearson managed the perfect score - number of boats plus one for 6
races - by managing a DNF in the first race and a DNS in the rest. John's
boat took off for the far shore in the first race and then was
unserviceable. I asked John what's working okay? - his answer is a classic,
"The stand". It pays to have a sense of humour with these model boats -
after all it's fun we're after.

Solings:
1. Brian Credico 9.0 pts
2. Don Demeza 21.0
3. tie Terry Doble 24.0
3. tie Peter Sly 24.0
4. Marg Brister 28.75
5. Pat Calnan 33.75
6. Heinz Czychun 37.0
7. Peter Easterbrook 39.0
8. John Pearson 60.0

Just a reminder as to how we score. First = .75 (so that means that Marg
and Pat both had one first as shown above) Second = 2, third = 3, etc. but a
DNS or a DNF = (number of boats plus 1) Everyone scores what they place
except that a first receives a bonus and a DNF, DNS a penalty.

September 2 The winds seemed great when we arrived but during the races we experienced mostly light winds and at times dead calm - the boats were actually drifting backwards at times.

We had 10 Solings on hand so we took turns at scoring - Those who won a race were next to score and thus miss a race. This system works very well because we race 7 races instead of six and the end result is that those who did not earn a scoring job were able to have their highest score eliminated from their final tally.

Soling:
1. Terry Doble 8.75 pts
2. Brian Credico 11.75
3. Peter Sly 22.0
4. Peter Brister 24.0
5. Heinz Czychun 28.75
6. Peter Easterbrook 30.0
7. Don Demeza 32.0
8. John Pearson 39.0
9. Marg Brister 40.0
10. Pat Calnan 42.0
Terry and Brian both have their boats tuned to perfection and the very low
scores show how they are able to take advantage of well trimmed boats. Terry had 5 firsts and a 5th and Brian had 1 first, 4 seconds and a third - very
consistent performers these two - a mark to shoot at for all of us.
September 9: What a great day - good wind and we had 12 boats out - Congrats to John Pearson, 6th place 4 times and last week was the first time John has managed to sail in all races in one day.

Welcome back to Len Ricco - we missed you Len - your day wasn't that good
but you got it all together again by the last race and managed a first.

Everyone must have been having an ups and downs type of day because I
thought I was doing very badly but ended up with a 2nd - that can only mean
one thing - that everyone thought they were also having a bad day.

Solings:
1. Terry Doble 15.25 pts
2. Don Demeza 17.75
3. Peter Brister 18.0
4. Brian Credico 19.75
5. Jill Cox 28.0
6. Peter Sly 32.75
7. John Pearson 41.0
8. Marg Brister 42.0
9. Pat Calnan 45.0
10. Peter Easterbrook 52.0
11. Len Ricco 53.75
12. Heinz Czychun 67.0

September 16: I guess this was my kind of day - ever since we had some wild winds on Doug Last's pond and I did well in them - high winds are for me.

John Pearson ran an amazing first race - an easy first and his boat was
sailing perfectly - also his tactics on the upwind leg were amazing - I know
because I couldn't match him. When complimented, John said, "Yes - I often
seem to do well on the first race" - a prophesy fulfilled - at the start of
the second race John was dismasted and that was the end of the day for him.

Brian was struggling today with a weak sail servo- just goes to show that everyone has problems from time to time.

The gusts were so strong at times that the boats would become totally submerged downwind (submarine) as well as not come up through the wind. As a result several boats ended up on the rocks (me included) because the upwind mark was pretty close to the shallows.

Soling:
1. Don Demeza 9.5 pts
2. Peter Brister 15.75
3. Len Ricco 18.75
4. Peter Sly 20.75
5. Jill Cox 21.75
6. Heinz Czychun 30.0
7. Brian Credico 36.0
8. John Pearson 47.0
9. Marg Brister 54.0

September 23: TOO WINDY!!
Well all I can say it that, "we tried". It was a nice day but the winds were
beyond what our wee vessels can handle.

Brian tried first and watched his Soling struggle across the lake - it
refused to either come about or to Jibe - just flattened in the water and
getting smaller and smaller. Brian finally discovered that it was now on the
reverse tack and managed to keep it coming - just as it reached the shore
area it turned again so Brian rushed in and grabbed it - just in time as it
was filling with water from lying on its' side for about 45 minutes. (I should have had the Vang set looser so boom would lift to spill wind and not hit the water..BC)

Heinz tried next and did pretty well - pretty pleased with himself as he
actually covered part of the course - discretion prevailed so he took the
boat from the dangers of water.

I tried and ended up with the same problem as Brian - I ended up holding a
permanent turn down wind with the rudder, including full rudder trim in the
same direction - my reasoning was that if there was a momentary lull in the
wind that the boat would then jibe down wind - I thought I'd lost it to the
far shore but suddenly realized that the strategy worked and the boat was
returning - that's the end of that.

September 30: TOO WINDY AGAIN!!
Gusting to 30 knots. Racing was cancelled again.
October 7: After having been winded out on the last two race days - today was pretty reasonable - the wind was a bit high at the beginning but did moderate as the afternoon progressed. It was sunny and warm so a very enjoyable day, in fact, we tended to hang around and enjoy the sun and conversation after the racing.

Final Fall 2003 Results

We missed two days of racing therefore we had a total of 6 days of racing in the series. The best 4 days for each member counts for the series. If you didn't race the minimum of 4 race days then for the days you missed to give you a total of 4 days scored you are scored the highest score which was counted during the series. Remember that the scores used for the series are not those shown daily because each days score is divided by the number of boats racing on that day - follow all this??

Founder's Trophy

Final Regatta, Founder's Trophy:
What a great way to end up the season - the weather was great and the wind went beyond limits just as we finished the racing. We tried a new format for the final regatta and, in my view, it worked very well. For the first time we used a handicap start - the tape counted down to zero for the first start and then counted off each second up to 20 for the second start. The selected handicapped participants were those who would be receiving 2 or more trophies for the year.

The results, assisted by the handicap, were all over the clock and it was impossible to determine the winner until the points were assigned - that was the first very positive observation. The handicap time seemed to be about right as the late starters won a couple of races. Also, except for Jill Cox and Peter Brister, who were unable to continue racing, the scores were much closer than they have been in the past. Additionally there were two ties so I used a tie breaker technique for the final results.

Competitors L-R: Peter B., Marg, Peter S. Jill, Heinz, Brian, John, Don, Len
Results:
1. Len Ricco 10.5 pts
2. Heinz Czychun 12.75
3. Don Demeza 12.75
4. Peter Sly 13.75
5. Brian Credico 13.75
6. Marg Brister 19.75
7. John Pearson 22.75
8. Jill Cox 33.0
9. Peter Brister 48.0
Peter B. had his boat holed in the second race so withdrew and Jill had an
intermittent switch so withdrew after the fourth race. We raced 8 and
counted the best 5 for each.

I think we will use this handicap start next year as it worked very well. We
need to figure out a dynamic rule to build the handicap in for every racing
day. For example, we could rule that during any racing day as soon as anyone
has scored two firsts or seconds that they would be handicapped for the
remaining races on that day. This will allow each day to be stand-alone -
give it some thought and we will discuss at our annual meeting next year.

John Pearson, who we manage to mention from time to time, was first - that's
F I R S T - in the last race of the year. We'll have to watch, perhaps John
has made a discovery - nice going John.

TIP - watch the other boats - if halfway to the first mark it is obvious
that there will be group activity at the mark - take a course to swing wide
of the mark - around the group activity - and keep your speed up. Tacking at
the mark with other boats close by is a guaranteed foul up. The shortest
route is not always the fastest.

Nice to finish with a great day!
