Spring Series
(Overall Final Results Here)
May 02: I think it is fair to say that with 14 Mini-12's showing up for the first day of racing plus two other possibles - we have become a Mini-12 club (I didn't count those who have two boats) Dirk had interference problems of some kind. There are no duplications so it's a problem of checking the possibilities one at a time. I remember that for two years I had to move away from the others but even then whenever my boat was close to other boats I lost control - I had to purchase a better quality radio - Brian experienced the same problem last year and now has a new radio - some testing is in order to explore Dirk's problem. So much for the preamble - Here are the results: |
Mini-12 There were a few
first race problems - our newest member Phillip Allison is to be commended
for hanging in there after missing the first three races. The ties were
broken by "best score" but of course we end up with the total
points at the end of the series anyway. For new members - the weekly
point results are divided by the number of boats racing so that there
is no advantage from having lower points simply because there are days
with fewer boats. |
May
9: Not much wind but good races with lots of opportunity to
change positions as gusts moved around the course. With 12 boats we
will need a good start line and a longer course when possible. Nice
to have Pat back racing a Mini-12 and started out with a great 4th.
Marg Brister with a 4th and a 3rd did well. Peter Savidge missed the
course in the first race but came back with a vengance for a 1st and
a 2nd - then the old hands figured out the situation. Phillip Allison,
as a new member, shows improvement each race day - I know how it feels
- when you have a good race you say to yourself "hey that wasn't
so bad, I can do that again" - keeps us coming back for more. |

16: Great sailing with good south winds. Rain quite before racing
started. Results show total points and finishes for each race. |
Mini
- 12's |
| May 23: |
Mini
- 12's Chris, Peter Savidge
and Anthony also should be pleased with their results. All had some
excellent races but the short course injected various variables into
each race (bad starts, collisions, rafting, luck at the marks) |
May
30 : A very interesting afternoon - dead calm at 1.00 o'clock
but wind arrived for us at 1.15 and six races were completed in a little
over an hour. |
|
Mini-12's Peter Sly had an amazingly consistent day -5 seconds and 1 third Brian produced 4 firsts, a fifth and an eighth This is a clear example of how a 7th throw-away race would likely have given Brian a clear first. Throw-aways tend to be a reverse handicap as the leaders often have only one bad race for one reason or another whereas the less skilled will likely have a number of poor finishes so it doesn't make much difference. |
June 06: The results were interesting in that the firsts were well scattered - Brian only had 1 first but was by far the most consistent - Jill Cox had 2 firsts but also a 13th - Marg Brister on her first day this year managed a first but unfortunately missed the first race - Norm Struthers also had a first but also a 14th - Peter Savidge had 1 first but also an 8th. From this you can see that most of us had both good and bad races. With 15 boats racing
this was the largest turnout of one boat class since our club began
- only 4 of our Mini-12 fleet was absent. |

June
13:We had a great sailing day on Tuesday - a brisk wind from
the right direction - only 9 boats - I guess some were worn out after
the regatta on Saturday - I know I was - slept all Sunday afternoon. |

June
20: Only 7 boats raced - it's summer and members are away |

Your five best of
eight race days counted. |
1.
Brian Credico 6.71 pts This is a pretty impressive fleet of Mini-12's and everyone has someone close to beat in the next series of 8 race days. The points above
are adjusted daily by the number of boats racing on each race day.

July
11: Our first day at Oak Lake and the first race of the Summer
Series. The wind was excellent - directly from our left pretty well
parallel to the shore line. We ended up with only 6 boats, Peter Sly
showed up but discovered that his radio board was loose in the boat
and it couldn't be repaired for the races so made his way back to Picton
(regatta damage presumed) |
Mini 12 1. Brian
Credico 6.75 pts Brian took 5 first
- he was just untouchable - the rest of us all had some good races but
blew it on others. Chris had two 2nds as opposed to one for John so
that broke the tie. |
July
18: The winds were light, flukey and challenging. Boats quite
close together but some on a run and others tacking. Everyone except
yours truly managed a first and Chris scored two firsts. Dirk was last
in the first two races and then was first in the last race - quite an
interesting day for our final day at Oak Lake. |

WEEK - JULY 25TH - 5.30 P.M. AT THE BAY OF QUINTE YACHT CLUB - FIRST
RACE 6.00 P.M. |
July 25 : Our first evening at BQYC was very interesting. I made the mistake of arriving very early and rigging my boat under the tree. A huge gust arrived and ripped my rigging off the boat. We then moved to the protection of the clubhouse where I completed three different repairs to my rigging (I was using a new set of sails and I had been a bit careless with a few joints - nothing like repairing at the field) Meanwhile, Brian set an interesting course in the dock area. We lined up by the guest boats and the first leg was a broad reach. The last leg of the triangle was a beat and we repeated that leg twice. Very interesting with the boats tacking meeting those running. We also had docks for hazards - there were some close shaves as we attempted to pass the docks without an additional tack. In the fourth race - approaching the finish line - Terry rammed the dock and de-rigged his boat. There were some
calms as the wind died but there were also some pretty fierce gusts
- in these conditions it's anyone's race. The final scores were much
closer than usual. John Hutchings should receive an award for the most
improved in one night of racing (he began with two lasts, then a 5th,
then a 2nd and finished with two firsts) |

I
think we all enjoyed the evening racing despite the initial winds and
storm threats. When we were bringing in the marks some of our spectators
on the guest boat dock thanked us for the sailing show. A number of
us enoyed the hospitality of the yacht club before heading home. |
August 01 : Very windy and wavey again. Race in the inner harbour for some protection but resulted in many windshifts. Waves also kept knocking the wind out or the sails. Needed luck in the shifts to do well. |

August
08: Finally we had good winds and a cool summer evening - as
a result 12 boats were on hand for the evening racing. |
|
1.
Don Demeza 11.25 pts Terry had equipment
failure and missed three racesJohn Hutchings missed one and Anthony
Gallow missed one. John Hutchings had a 3rd in the first race and this
broke the tie with Peter. |
If you wonder what I did to my boat to get that first place- read on - My deck eyes for the jib were slightly off standard (set to Soling rules) - one was legal and one was 1/4 inch out - I removed them and then spotted them exactly to Mini-12 instructions and then used the second eye from the bow. My measured distance from the top of the mast to the bow was about 3/4 of an inch longer than I had previously determined was nearer to the ideal. I replaced the top jib lines as they were difficult to adjust and set the distance at exactly 55 and 1/2 inches. I made sure that the boom for a tack was over the corner of the stern and that the jib was slightly past the stays. The sails full in adjustment is made with the sail stick and trim levers both at the bottom of their travel so that I can't stress the servo with the trim control. Downwind I let out both the stick and the trim control. I adjusted the sail slack to two fingers for the quieter winds. Presto - it worked
- the boat held a tack with hardly any rudder adjustment |
August
15: The winds were good on Tueday and we had a long course. |

John
Aitken is to be congratulated for staying in there on his first day
of racing. Peter had problems and we hope he'll have them solved for
our next day out.

Summer Series Overall Results |
|
|
1. Brian Credico 8.30
pts |
The scores carried
forward from each race day = score divided by number of boats that day
During series we raced 6 of the 8 days - best 4 days counted so if raced
all race days then we drop 2 highest scores. Days less than 4 are brought
up to 4 by adding the highest score in the series for each day - it was
4.71. I did not include John Aitkin in this series as his first race day
was the last day of the series. |
August
22: Another perfect racing day - good winds and 11 boats present
- the first day of our Fall series. |
|
|
Mini 12 |
Chris Wyvill broke
the tie with Peter by scoring a second in the first race. Anthony had
a great 5th race - scored a second My boat is sailing very well except
that in two races my light jib sheet tangled around the jib boom resulting
in no slot and an inability to tack - I must fix this problem before the
regatta on Saturday. |
|
August
29: High winds in the afternoon but by the time our races began
at 6.00 p.m. the wind had died and what there was came out of the east which
put us in the shadow of the Anchorage Condo - we did manage 6 races however
and the results were all over the clock. |
|
1.
Terry Doble 11.25 pts |
Brian broke the
tie with both a 2nd and a 3rd - Peter had a 2nd and a 5th I was 9th in the first race - one 2nd and managed a 3rd Norm was 1st in the first race but ended up 9th Examples of how the results varied by individuals in light wind conditions. Only Terry is very consistent when the winds are light - Terry and #34 are able to find wind when there isn't any. John Huthings did very well with a 3rd and a 4th and kept in the middle of the pack. |
September 05 No wind, no Race |

September
12 Today, It seemed as if we had a great wind but it was coming
straight from the anchorage condo and as a result there were strange calms
when some moved and others didn't. |
|
| 1.
Terry Doble 13.25 pts |
It's
interesting to note that with flukey winds: |
| September
19: A great racing day - fairly high winds but the boats were controlable. |
|
| 1. Brian
Credico 14.5 pts 2. Terry Doble 17.25 3. Don Demeza 20.0 4. Peter Easterbrook 23.75 5. Norm Struthers 25.0 6. Peter Sly 38.0 7. Jill Cox 42.0 8. Pat Calnan 45.0 9. John Hutchings 46.0 |
John
Aitkin was sailing before the racing began but his boat took on so much
water that he decided not to enter Everyone had at least
one bad race - Brian, Terry and myself all scored a 6th in one race so
it was a real racing day with steady winds. |
| September 26: Good winds but a bit tricky getting positioned to round the windward mark. An excellent racing day. | |
Mini 12: |
|
| October 03: Another very nice sailing day - good winds and comfortable temperature - let's hope it stays that way for two more weeks.I say two more weeks because we have one more day of racing to complete the Fall series - that's October 10th - then we will have the "FINAL REGATTA" at the Yacht Club on October 17th | |
|
Mini 12 |
Terry is to be congratulated for four firsts and then it was a close battle between Peter Savidge and Peter Sly |
| October
10 An interesting day - we lost one of the marker weights
so ended up with a simple upwind/downwind course - twice around - boats
meeting on each leg. |
|
Mini
12: |
Terry is unbelievably consistent with 4 firsts and 2 seconds - note the spread in points to the group after Terry. John Hutchings rang up a first in the first race (Chris take note) nice going John as also a second in the 4th race. Jill had a boat failure
- no rudder - will have that fixed up for the regatta. |
Overall results for Fall Series Here are the results of the Fall Series and Club Championships |
