2005 Spring Series
(Overall Final Results Here)

May 03: Congratulations to the 15 or so participants and spectators who braved a cold and windy day to attend our first race day of the 2005 season. A special welcome to Peter Savidge and Anthony Gallow.

It was windy, cold and rather large waves for our little boats. The Solings did not finish their last two races due to high winds.

A reminder concerning our scoring system. The points shown below are based on: 1st - .75 pts, 2nd - 2 pts, 3rd - 3 pts etc. A DNF or DNS scores number of boats plus 1.

Today, I have added 2 points for each race missed by the Solings (all Solings had 4 points added so that they do not gain a low score advantage by not racing the full six races)

Here's how we did on day 1:

Mini-12

1. Don Demeza 15.5 pts
2. Brian Credico 16.0
3. Terry Doble 17.25
4. Norm Struthers 23.75
5. Peter Cox 31.0
6. Chris Wyvill 34.0
7. Anthony Gallow 42.0

Terry was dismasted in a collision but only missed one race. Obviously I was pleased with my newly finished boat - first time in the water - couldn't let my sails out beyond a broad reach so pretty wild down wind. These Mini 12's sure don't handle like a Soling - they turn when they are good and ready.

Soling 1 Metre

1. Peter Easterbrook 10.75 pts
2. Peter Sly 13.5
3. Jill Cox 16.75
4. Peter Savidge 20.0 tie
4. Pat Calnan 20.0 tie

A great first day - we now have 15 Mini-12's and 20 Solings.

Don Demeza - your Race Recorder.

May 10: There was hardly any wind for the first couple of races and then the wind picked up resulting in comfortable sailing. I had my new Mini-12 weighed - thought it was light but it's 18 pounds - no wonder I can hardly carry it - don't know how that happened - the little scale I used for the lead obviously is not even close.

I sailed two boats today but found that it's a lot of work. I'm sorry I fouled up the last race of the Solings - I thought we were finished and had my boat out of the water.

A good day but I'm tired handling both a Soling and a Mini 12.

Mini-12's

1. Terry Doble 10.25 pts
2. Brian Credico 11.75
3. Don Demeza 16.5
4. Chris Wyvill 26.0
5. Norm Struthers 40.0
6. Anthony Gallow 43.0
7. Jill Cox 44.0
8. Rob Michael 45.0
Solings:

1, Don Demeza 8.0 pts
2. Brian Credico 12.5
3. Peter Sly 24.0
4. Peter Savidge 25.0
5. Peter Easterbrook 26.0
6. John Hutchings 37.0
7. Rob Michael 43.0
8. Peter Cox 49.0
9. Pat Calnan 54.0

Peter Savidge is to be congratulated - a very steady performance in each race.

May 17: Cool and windy, but no rain. We raced in the inner harbour to avoid most of the waves coming in from the south west. To minimize down-time we did three races at a time of each class. Courses were relatively fast and we had done all 12 races before 3:00 pm

Mini - 12's

1 Terry Doble 9.25 pts
2 Brian Credico 16.0
3 Jill Cox 21.75
4 Rob Michael 23.75
5 Chis Wyvill 26.75
6 Norm Struthers 30.0

Not the high scores but ending in a .75 which indicates a first - congrats on those firsts - it can be done - you just need more seconds and thirds.

Norm Struthers was very consistent after he solved the problems which kept him out of the first three races.

Solings:

1 Peter Savidge 12.75 pts
2 Brian Credico 15.5 tie
2 Peter Easterbrook 15.5 tie
3 Peter Cox 21.75
4 Peter Sly 26.0
5 John Hutchings 37.0

Pat did not start any of the races so I did not include her in the day's racing - it's a day missed.

Peter Savidge was outstanding - now sure know how to race a Soling - only one first but three seconds and two 3rds. - very well done Peter.

Brian and Peter managed an absolute tie with identical positions, namely two 1sts each and one each of a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. - you couldn't plan a match like that.

Peter Cox was very consistent once he got his boat operating in the second race. Except for the first race Peter could have managed a 2nd. - bad luck.

May 24 : Windy, cool with even a short shower. Inner harbourt was protected from waves but winds were very shifty with 90 degree instant shifts.
Mini - 12's

1 Brian Credico 5.75 pts
2 Chris Wyvill 11.75
3 Jill Cox 22.0

Only three vessels - I should have been there as I now have a full travel for running and also changed the mast rake to try for a hands off tack. Jill was doing very well. leading and suffered a broken rudder - too bad - got to get the bugs out for the regatta
Solings

1 Brian Credico 12.5 pts
2 Peter Easterbrook 13.25
3 Peter Sly 20.75
4 Peter Savidge 23.0
5 John Hutchings 28.0
6 Peter Cox 30.0

Peter Cox broke a mast stay in the 4th race and therefore scored (boats plus 1) for three races - sure runs up the score but the day will become a throw-away for Peter in the finals for the Spring series. If anyone needs a bit heavier wire for the stays - I have some

May 31 :Today was a perfect sailing day - lots of sun - nice wind from the south-west. Peter Cox set up a "Regatta" course for us to practice on and the races went off without a hitch. Here are the results:

The trim setting for our sail sets are very critical so if your boat does't seem to be keeping up on a consistent basis you need to look at a few key points:

1. Measure and record the distance from your bow to the top of the mast - adjust it half an inch at a time - if your boat weathers up into the wind then shorten this measurement.
2. About 1 inch slack to the sail foot is a good starting point for average winds. I don't find this particular measure to be too critical.
3. Your main boom on a Soling - close hauled should point over the corner of the stern. The jib should be at the stays or farther out. If the jib boom points instide the stays when close hauled then I find the slot is too small and the boat will do very poorly on a tack. I tend to point the jib boom just outside the stays.
The above all apply to the Solings but, of course are similar for the Mini-12. Remember, I used to be consistently last - they called me "Beedlebom" and then I discovered the three key points I mention above - they are a good starting point.

Mini-12's

1. Terry Doble 8.75 pts
2. Don Demeza 14.75
3. Brian Credico 17.0
4. John Hutchings 24.0
5. Jill Cox 32.0
6. Chris Wyvill 33.0

Terry is consistently our number one so we wish him well in the forthcoming regatta - he scratched last year so we look to Terry to have everything in order this time.

Solings

1. Peter Cox 9.0 pts
2. Peter Savidge 16.5
3. Peter Easterbrook 18.0
4. Brian Credico 18.0
5. John Hutchings 30.0
6. Pat Calnan 36.0

Congrats to Peter Cox - he did what we knew he could do in taking four firsts. Brian and Peter E. tied in points but Peter E had more seconds so it broke the tie.Peter Savidge was doing great but blew it on the last two races.

June 07: Windy - hot - sunny - so we set a protected course between the docks and the Front Street shoreline.
My Mini-12 suffered a rudder failure before the races began - If I had been thinking I had time to go home and exchange the Mini-12 for a Soling - too hot to think I guess.

Solings

1. Peter Easterbrook 10.5 pts
2. Peter Sly 11.5
3. Peter Savidge 20.75
4. Pat Calnan 22.0
5. John Hutchings 23.75

It was Peter all the way - the .75 part of John's points means that he did have a first - proves that it can be done.

Mini-12's

1. Terry Doble 5.75 pts
2. Jill Cox 14.0
3. Chris Wyvill 15.75

Terry is hard to beat - 5 firsts and a second.
Chris deserves a lot of credit - his eyesight problems are begin compensated for by a pair of small binoculars which fit like glasses - a real comeback in the final three races after Chris discovered he was using the wrong jib location. Jill is steady by just can't seem to beat the master.

We have been missing a number of our friends over the past several weeks: Anthony Gallow, Rob Michael, Norm Struthers, Peter and Marg Brister.

June 14 :Excellent racing conditions - good but moderate winds and Peter Cox set a new course for us to try (getting ready for the regatta when we may have 18 boats in one race). Peter also brought along his inflatable dinghy and a motor - made it easy to set marks but a lot of lugging for Peter - thanks from all of us - the course was great.

For the first time this year we raced the Solings and Mini-12's together so I skipped the racing to act as timer and judge.

There is very little to differentiate between the speed of these two boats - three firsts went to a Mini 12 and 3 firsts to a Soling. No collisions but only 7 boats total. John Hutchings gave all of the Mini's a nose bumper so we are ready for the masses next week - thanks John.

Solings

1. Peter Cox 9.0 pts
2. Peter Savidge 16.75
3. Pat Calnan 21.0
4. John Hutchings 21.75
5. Peter Easterbrook 23.0

Peter Cox is very consistent with the Soling - he had 4 firsts a 2nd and a 4th - the 4th was only because he let me sail his boat in the 4th race - thanks Pete but it cost you.

Mini-12's

1. Terry Doble 4.5 pts
2. Jill Cox 13.0

With only two boats Terry had a first in every race - I think that's a first since we began racing. You tried Jill and we thank you for the effort - all good practice for the regatta and then you can return to your favourite - the Soling.

June 21:
A good day yesterday - fairly strong winds - an interesting course off the point and the best turnout we have had for a while so we ran the two classes separately. Here are the results:

Solings

1. Peter Cox 10.25 pts
2. Pat Calnan 11.25
3. Peter Savidge 18.0
4. Peter Sly 21.0
5. John Hutchings 29.0

Congratulations to Pat - three firsts and three thirds - very consistent Pat and two close finishes (a 4 inch lead twice in a row) - I thought you had the day but the old master nudged you out of first.

Mini-12's

1. Don Demeza 9.25 pts
2. Terry Doble 15.5
3. Peter Easterbrook 17.75
4. Jill Cox 21.0
5. Norm Struthers 27.0
6. Chris Wyvill 41.0
7. Anthony Gallow 45.0
8. Rob Michael 52.0

Obviously I was pleased with my new boat - it missed the past two weeks with a broken rudder control and a broken jib sheet. Terry couldn't seem to get his trim up to his usual standards - two firsts but the two 4ths took their toll. It was good to have Anthony and Rob back with us but both had difficulties with their boats - you just never know what will fail next on these little boats.

Final Results for 2005 Spring Series

There are 8 race days in a series and we did not miss any race days during the Spring Series beginning May 3rd and each Tuesday ending June 21st

The individual point scores on each race day are divided by the number of boats racing that day and this is the score which becomes the score for the series.

We count the best 5 days for each participant during the series so if you race every day then you get to drop 3.

If you do not complete 5 race days then the highest score being used in the series becomes your score for the days missed.

SOLING RESULTS

1. Peter Easterbrook 11.93 pts
2. Peter Cox 12.32
3. Peter Savidge 14.6
4. Brian Credico 15.05
5. Peter Sly 15.33
6. Pat Calnan 21.35
7. John Hutchings 22.88
8. Don Demeza 24.89
9. Rob Michael 28.78

MINI-12 RESULTS

1. Terry Doble 8.14 pts
2. Brian Credico 11.17
3. Don Demeza 13.89
4. Jill Cox 20.68
5. Chris Wyvill 21.74
6. Norm Struthers 22.76
7. Peter Easterbrook 26.22
8. John Hutchings 28.0
9. Rob Michael 28.09
10 Anthony Gallow 29.0

Congratulations to Peter Easterbrook and Terry Doble. Also to Brian Credico who managed to particpate in both classes. I tried that and it wore me out running around with boats.

2005 Summer Series
June 28 :
We raced both classes together today - here are the results:

Solings

1 Terry Doble 5.75 pts
2 Chris Wyvill 15.75
3 Jll Cox 23.0
4 Pat Calnan 25.0

Mini-12's

1 Peter Easterbrook 13.75 pts
2 Peter Cox 16.75
3 Don Demeza 18.15
4 John Hutchings 20.0
5 Peter Sly 20.75

July 05: Racing cancelled due to weather

July 12:It was hot but it turned out to be a pretty good day for racing.

Solings - 2 boats only

Pat Calnan 8.25 pts
Chris Wyvill 8.25 pts

A perfect tie and no way to break it as they both had the same number of first and seconds. The Solings did very well against the Mini-12's. Chris had a first in the fifth race and Pat had four fourths - well done and made the racing a lot more fun than if they had raced with just two boats

Mini-12's

1 Terry Doble 8.25 pts
2 Brian Credico 12.5
3 Don Demeza 13.75
4 Norm Struthers 27.0
John Hutchings 27.0
5 Anthony Gallow 40.0

Another perfect tie for fourth.
Anthony had an equipment failure in the second race so suffered a DNS for the remainder of the races

Top of Page

July 19: Our first race at Oak Lake provided some pretty gusty conditions but the wind was from the right direction so the racing was very good. A few boats were damaged including mine (tried to approach the dock on the windward side - big mistake)

Chris Wyvill was trying out a new boat that he built for Ron Bullock in Waterloo - Ron will be sailing with us next week. Sail number 92 and will be using channel 65. Chris only raced the first race and did very well with a 3rd. I only counted 7 boats in the Mini-12 series and three were unserviceable by the 4th race.

In Race 4 I lost my forestay - the main was up in the air and the jib in the water but managed to finish the downwind leg - everything collapsed just over the line.

Solings

1 Terry Doble 7.0 pts
2 Pat Calnan 9.5

Pat took on our champ and managed to take 2 races. I am sure Pat finds it a lot easier when there are less boats to contend with.

Mini-12's

1 Brian Credico 11.5 pts
2 Peter Easterbrook 12.5
3 John Hutchings 25.75
4 Peter Sly 26.0
5 Don Demeza 27.75
6 Norm Struthers 37.0
7 Anthony Gallow 42.0

July 26 : Cancelled due to rain and thunder

August 02 : Variable winds at Oak Lake - could have been a pretty good day with a record number of boats - 6 Solings and 6 Mini-12's - problem was that we experienced a large number of floating weeds which stopped the Solings dead in the water in some instances. We did manage to complete the races - Terry had the biggest problem as he tended to catch them in the rudder post and that is fatal as all steering is lost.

I feel that the floating weeds will disappear when the weather finally cools so that there is less week-end motor boat activity on the lake - then the winds will drift off.

Solings

1. Brian Credico 9.25 pts
2. Peter Savidge 14.5
3. Don Demeza 17.5
4. Pat Calnan 26.0
5. Norm Struthers 30.0
6. Terry Doble 34.0

Mini-12's

1. Brian Credico 9.0 pts
2. Peter Easterbrook 14.75
3. John Hutchings 17.75
4. Norm Struthers 22.0
5. Chris Wyvill 29.0
6. Anthony Gallow 32.0

Norm and Brian raced both their Solings and Mini-12's - that keeps a person busy. John nailed a first in the last race plus a 2nd and two 3rd's - it's coming John.

August 09: A very windy, sunny day at Oak Lake but we had a great turnout with 8 Mini-12's
and 3 Solings. The weed situation was reasonable but the heavy gusts were quite a challenge
for the Solings.

Solings:

1. Don Demeza 9.25 pts
2. Peter Savidge 13.5
3. Brian Credico 13.75

Mini-12's:

1. Terry Doble 10.5 pts
2. Sandy Struthers 18.75
3. Chris Wyvill 21.75
4. Peter Easterbrook 24.75
5. Brian Credico 28.75
6. Norm Struthers 30.0
7. John Hutchings 33.0
8. Anthony Gallow 51.0

We welcome Sandy Struthers and congratulate him on a second. Sandy seems a natural as he quietly goes about the business of winning races - you will recall that he won the Mini-12 Regatta this year against 17 boats

August 16: The winds were reasonable but tricky and that is evidenced by the way the firsts are distributed - all over the clock. Without a doubt the races were won on the upwind tacks and this made for an exciting afternoon.

Solings

1. Don Demeza 12.5
2. Peter Savidge 13.5
3. Brian Credico 14.5
4. Pat Calnan 18.0
5. Peter Brister 34.0

The results were very close. Peter was using this as a practice session and will be back in shape for the Fall Series beginning next week.

Mini-12's

1. Brian Credico 12.25 pts
2. Peter Easterbrook 17.75
3. Terry Doble 22.5
4. Chris Wyvill 29.0
5. Norm Struthers 31.0
6. Don Demeza 31.0
7. John Hutchings 32.0
8. Anthony Gallow 39.0

I think Anthony should call this a good day - all races completed and a third in the last race - now you know it can be done Anthony. Norm and I tied but he managed a second, whereas my best was a third.

2005 Summer Series Overall Results
We schedule 8 race days in the series, however two days were washed out due to weather.
Therefore, there were six race days and your best 4 are counted. If you did not race a minimum of 4 races then the days required to make 4 are a big penalty - you receive the highest of the scores used during the calculation of results.

Solings

1. Don Demeza 14.21 pts
2. Brian Credico 14.69
3. Peter Savidge 15.29

4. Terry Doble 16.28
5. Pat Calnan 16.8
6. Chris Wyvill 19.4
7. Norm Struthers 22.07
8. Jill Cox 22.76
9. Peter Brister 23.81

6 race days - 4 best counted - score for days to make 4 = 5.67
Peter Brister, Jill Cox and Norm Struthers raced one day only this series.

Mini-12's

1. Brian Credico 6.75 pts
2. Peter Easterbrook 9.2
3. Terry Doble 11.86

4. Don Demeza 13.77
5. John Hutchings 14.64
6. Norm Struthers 15.79
7. Chris Wyvill 17.54
8. Peter Sly 20.6
9. Anthony Gallow 22.57

6 race days - 4 best counted - score for days to make 4 = 6.37

2005 Fall Series

August 23: North winds at Oak Lake means our racing area is in the lee and winds can come across in front of us from either direction. The winds were very light so we shortened the course for the last races.

Solings

1. Peter Savidge 11.5 pts
2. Peter Easterbrook 12.5
3. Jill Cox 14.5
4. Pat Calnan 21.0

Obviously Pat had a bad hair day - the other three were very close as each had 2 firsts.

Mini-12's

1. Terry Doble 11.0 pts
2. John Hutchings 17.75
3. Chris Wyvill 18.75
4. Brian Credico 19.0
5. Don Demeza 24.0
6. Anthony Gallow 34.0

John and Chris are both doing well - Anthony had no technical problems and would have done well if there had been decent winds. It is very difficult for beginners to find the little wind there is - Terry is a master at this.

August 30: The winds today were on shore from the south-west but varied from nil to light. Due to the light winds we raced the two Solings present along with the 7 Mini-12's. The results should put to rest any discussion concerning whether or not the Mini-12's should have a larger sail than the Soling. The Soling sails are a perfect fit. For 7 consecutive races at least three Mini-12's came in ahead of the first Soling - this in very light winds - my Mini-12 is 2 lbs heavy at 18 lbs and also has a sail problem but managed four seconds and two thirds.

Solings

1. Peter Savidge 7.0 pts
2. Jill Cox 8.25

  Mini-12's

1. Terry Doble 4.5. pts
2. Don Demeza 14.0
3. Chris Wyvill 18.75
4. Anthony Gallow 24.0
5. John Hutchings 26.0
6. Peter Sly 30.0
7. Norm Struthers 32.0

Terry won every race and while this is no surprise, I think it's the first time that any of us have managed a complete race day of firsts - nice going Terry. Chris missed a number of markers but despite his penalties did very well. Anthony is steadily becoming more consistent with practice and now only needs to solve what appears to be some kind of interference problem.

September 06 Another quiet day.

Solings

1. Peter Savidge 5.75
2. Pat Calnan 11.75

We need more Solings - Jill and Peter Easterbrook both have raced one or more race days in the Fall season - There are five days of racing left so lots of time to win the series with either a Soling or a Mini-12.

Mini-12's

1. Terry Doble 9.25 pts
1. Peter Sly 9.25 pts
2. Norm Struthers 19.0
3. Chris Wyvill 22.0
4. John Hutchings 31.0

A perfect tie and no way to break it as they each had 3 first, 2 seconds and 1 third. John had a sail winch problem

September 13 What a great day - sunny, warm and perfect winds.

Solings

1. Pat Calnan 8.25pt
2. Peter Savidge 11.5
3. Jill Cox 15.75

Congratulations Pat - Terry will be proud.

Mini-12's

1. Don Demeza 11.25pts
2. Brian Credico 14.5
3. Chris Wyvill 19.75
4. Peter Sly 20.0
5. John Hutchings 24.0

The racing was excellent and a lot of fun.

September 20: A very windy, gusty and tricky day - two vessels went out of service - Only Pat Calnan brought a Soling so Pat volunteered to judge the races - thanks Pat - another star on the refridgerator door.

No Soling race

Mini - 12 results

1. Don Demeza 10.0 pts
2. Brian Credico 14.5
3. John Hutchings 17.0
4. Chris Wyvill 21.0
5. Anthony Gallow 39.0
6. Rob Michael 41.0

We welcome Rob back and as he finished the first race he commented, "the first race I've finished this year". It was short lived as a collision in the second race produced all kinds of difficulties for he and Anthony. Marg Credico was brought into service as part of the rescue crew for one boat dismasted and the other heading off on its own.

September 27: An excellent race day but again only one Soling turned out which means another missed race day for the Solings. Peter raced with the Mini-12's and did very well. So that Peter can see how he did I have provided two sets of results.
Mini-12's and 1 Soling

1. Brian Credico 10.25 pts
2. Peter Savidge (Soling) 15.5
3. Chris Wyvill 18.75
4. John Hutchings 23.75
5. Peter Sly 25.0
6. Don Demeza 26.0
7. Dirk DeBoer 28.0
8. Anthony Gallow 42.0

Mini-12's

1. Brian Credico 9.25 pts
2. Chris Wyvill 15.75
3. John Hutchings 18.75
4. Peter Sly 20.75
5. Don Demeza 21.75
6. Dirk DeBoer 27.0
7. Anthony Gallow 42.0

Dirk is to be congratulated - first sailing of a new boat and he started off with a bang scoring a second on the first race, then two thirds and a five. The fact that he did not start in the last two races pushed is score up at 7 points a race (number of boats plus 1)

Anthony suffered a rigging failure in the first race and was unable to get it corrected. Your truly was operating with a repaired jib sheet which would not slide free in the light winds - last week with the high winds the problem was there but the wind was high enough to pull the jib sheet through the deck fixture. It will be repaired by next week.

October 04: Another sunny, warm day with light to good winds. 4 Solings and 7 Mini-12's made for an excellent day of racing. The wind was directly on-shore so the start line was a bit off and the sun's reflection made it tricky at the second mark, however, no failures and all boats raced all races.
Solings

1. Peter Savidge 11.5 pts
2. Peter Easterbrook 15.0
3. Pat Calnan 15.5
4. Jill Cox 16.5

Mini-12's

1. Brian Credico 11.0 pts
2. Terry Doble 15.5
3. Don Demeza 19.0
4. Chris wyvill 26.0
5. Peter Sly 28.0
6. John Hutchings 32.0
7. Dirk DeBoer 35.0

Our final race day is next Tuesday at BQYC.

October 11 Variable wind conditions off the point at the yacht club but a good day of racing - tested the observation and reaction time of the participants. Willaim Pullen, sail 07 was visiting so I have included two results for the Mini-12's - one with Willy and the other without - the latter will be used for the series results.
Solings

1. Peter Savidge 9.25 pts
2. Peter Easterbrook 10.5
3. Jill Cox 14.75

All three participants had at least one first - second and third but Peter Savidge managed three firsts - well done all - it was great boat watching.

Mini 12's

1. Terry Doble 11.25 pts
