2004 Spring Series
(Overall Final Results Here)

May 11: Our first race of the year may have been a bit of a disaster but the second race of the Spring series, today, certainly made up for it - sunny - warm - and reasonable wind from the south.

Everyone pitched in - I had lots of help and as a result it was a relaxing and fun day for me. Now a couple who had difficulties may not agree but at least we were warm.

A special welcome to Chris Wyvill who purchased a Soling from Ken Douglas. Chris made an outstanding start in the first race but after that he discovered the problems of "depth of field" etc. etc - we've all been through it. It's a matter of practice Chris and then it's trim trim trim. My boat was behaving badly for the first couple of races - I shortened the slack on the foot of the jib by a quarter of an inch - presto - three firsts. It never ceases to amaze me - the importance of trim - it took me three years or more to learn that.

Anyway it was a great day and here's how we did:

Solings

1. Don Demeza 10.25 pts
2. Peter Easterbrook 15.5
3. Len Ricco 17.75
4, Jill Cox 19.0
5. Pat Calnan 27.0
6. Chris Wyvill 37.0

Wild up wind mark rounding

Mini-12

Windy up wind start

1. Terry Doble 5.75 pts
2. Brian Credico 13.0
3. Norm Struthers 24.0
4. Peter Cox 30.0
5. Peter Sly 30.75

May 18: Cancelled due to weather

Top of Page
May 25:There was little wind but Jill Cox reigned supreme under those conditions - first in every race - nice going Jill. As I hear it, the wind was so slight that the group felt that they would never finish the remaining races so four only raced and counted.

Solings:
1. Jill Cox 3.0 pts
2. Len Ricco 10.0
3. John Pearson 20.0
4. Pat Calnan 21.0
5. Peter Easerbrook 23.0 tie
5. Marg Brister 23.0 tie
6. Chris Wyvill 24.0
7. Peter Brister 25.0

Mini 12
1. Terry Doble 7.75 pts
2. Brian Credico 10.5
3. Peter Sly 10.75
4. Peter Cox 15.0
5. Norm Struthers 18.0

Terry managed to win another - but this time only a single first.

June1: we seem to be working with extremes this Spring series. This day the winds were up to 20 kts with a threat of a thunder storm - consensus was to stop at four races before more boats were damaged. Len and Jill did well with two firsts each - Peter Easterbrook stayed in the first three and Chris Wyvill managed two seconds - well done under the conditions experienced.
SOLINGS
1. Len Ricco 8.5 pts
2. Jill Cox 10.5
3. Peter Easterbrook 11.0
4. Chris Wyvill 13.0
5. Pat Calnan 20.0
6. John Pearson 21.0
MINI-12'S
1. Terry Doble 5.5 pts
2. Brian Credico 7.5
3. Norm Struthers 15.0
4. Peter Cox 16.0
5. Peter Sly 22.0
June 8 : This was our 6th racing day of the Spring series and another bit of a disaster - the winds were strong but the major problem was a breakdown of boats.

The Soling races held will not count in the series as by the end of three races we only had one vessel left for the 4th race - my old faithful "08". We began with 7 vessels, however two were very new members with untried boats. Here's the story - Jim Temple with a new boat sail #28 - Chris Wyvill sail #17 (servo broke loose in the boat) and no sail number Rob Michael was not really ready for a race, That eliminated three vessels before the racing began. We had three vessels in the first race - Jill #16 - Peter Easterbrook #25 - myself #08. Peter's rigging failed in the 2nd race leaving two - Jill's batteries gave out after the 3rd race leave one.

To the new members - I would strongly suggest that you sail your boats for a couple of hours before attempting a race and also remember that we are pressed for time to complete 6 races with each of two classes - everyone will help but very difficult during a race. After the races are finished any member will help a newcomer, or better still, ask a more experienced member to join you in a practice session when the winds are moderate and without the time contraints of a race
SOLINGS

See above

MINI 12's
1. Norm Struthers 9.5 pts
2. Peter Sly 10.25
3. Peter Cox 17.75.

Completed 6 races without difficulty.

Congratulations Norm - you made the number one - now you know how.

June 15: Well we finally had another good day of sailing - the second only on our sked Tuesdays.

The Solings were well represented - 8 vessels including our two newer members.

To Chris and Rob - it takes quite a bit of practice - some of us have been sailing these little guys for about 9 years - I can well remember my first two years - last every race "it was 'Beadle-Bom'".

Jill was doing very well until dismasted in the 5th race - the fortunes of it all.

Solings
1. Len Ricco 14.5 pts
2. Don Demeza 15.75
3T Peter Easterbrook 18.75 tie
3T John Pearson 18.75 tie
4. Jill Cox 29.75
5. Chris Wyvill 35.0
6. Pat Calnan 39.0
7. Rob Michael 47.0

Mini 12's

1. Terry Doble 9.0 pts
2. Peter Sly 10.25

June 22 :I think we can consider today one of the best racing days we have experienced - the wind was mostly reliable and moderately strong - none of our boats experienced any major failures - and some of our less experienced had some great results - let's hope we have similar conditions for our first Mini-12 regatta next Saturday.

Soling Results:
1. Don Demeza 13.5 pts
2. Peter Brister 20.75
3. Marg Brister 22.75
4. Len Ricco 23.0
5. Jill Cox 24.5
6. John Pearson 32.0
7. Pat Calnan 38.0
8. Chris Wyvill 44.0

The Soling races were great and should provide a number of members with encouragement. Marg Brister won the first race and a 3rd on the second race - very nice sailing Marg. John Pearson outdid himself on the first race with a 2nd and then tried a close start in the second race - it didn't work but he got it back together again by the 4th race for a 2nd. Jill had two excellent races (two firsts) but couldn't hold it for the entire series. Peter was my challenge but his 6th in the 4th race sealed his fate. Chris is learning fast - his boat was out of trim but by the 5th race he got it under control and managed a 2nd - that was great Chris for your first few days of racing

Mini 12 Results:

1. Terry Doble 8.25 pts
2. Peter Sly 13.5
3. Brian Credico 15.75
4. Norm Struthers 25.0 tie
4. Peter Cox 25.0 tie

A tie is interesting - we are simply using points therefore no problem but suppose it was a single race and we wanted to break this tie - we have two options - Norm had two 3rds so on this basis he would win - on the other hand Norm had three 5ths and on this basis he would lose - interesting what these rules can do.

Final Results for 2004 Spring Series

Best 5 race days count - for every day missed in order to have 5 counting days - add the highest score counted for the series, which in this case is 6.0.

Also, remember that the raw points used for each race day are divided by the number of boats racing that day.

Solings:

Only 5 race days were completed. Inasmuch as the majority of the participants had raced on 5 days I elected to use "best 4" for the series.

1. Len Ricco 7.36
2. Jill Cox 8.35
3. Peter Easterbrook 9.62
4. Don Demeza 10.87
5. John Pearson 12.34
6. Chris Wyvill 15.05
7. Pat Calnan 15.27
8. Peter Brister 16.72
9. Marg Brister 16.77

Mini-12:

There were only 6 race days instead of 8 therefore 1/2 plus one means that a participants 4 best days are counted

1. Terry Doble 5.45 pts
2. Brian Credico 9.35
3. Peter Sly 12.67
4. Norm Struthers 14.57
5. Peter Cox 17.12

2004 Summer Series
July 6: This is a very strange year. We missed the first race of the Summer series due to high winds and then on July 6th the winds were so light that we gave up after five races.

This was our first day at our summer sailing site at Don Leslie's cottage on Oak Lake. As usual we were welcomed by Don and Tommy as well as daughter Jennifer and grandchildren.

The winds were so light that we finally had one race with the combined fleets - very interesting - although a Mini-12 was first, the Solings and Mini-12's alternated in crossing the finish line.

Solings:

1st Marg Brister 9.75 pts
2nd Peter Brister 13.75
3rd Peter Easterbrook 14.75
4th John Pearston 17.75
5th Don Demeza 17.75
6th Chris Wyvill 27.0

Congratulations to Marg - she not only led the Brister duo but defeated the fleet. Everyone, except Chris, managed a first place, however, Marg had a first, three seconds and a third - you really showed us how to do it in light winds Marg - very consistent performance.

Chris, unfortunately had to leave for work so only completed two races - I slightly modified the DNS scoring for this situation.

Yours truly needs to re-trim his Soling - new sails would help also - John and I tied but John had a first and a third whereas the best I could do was a first and a fourth.

Mini-12:

1st Terry Doble 3.75 pts
2nd Peter Sly 12.0
3rd Brian Credico 13.0
4th Norm Struthers 21.0

Terry monopolized the firsts! He did a great job determining which way the wind was coming from at that moment. Brian was far ahead on one race, but missed a subtle wind shift, got in irons, drifted backwards,a nd Terry passed him.

July 13: I don't usually give the positions in each race but I will today as the two classes make it interesting - also, with 10 boats and 2 classes it was sometimes difficult to know how an individual boat placed within it's class. Here are the race results:

Race 1: 34 / 16 / 87 / 43 / 5 / 29 / 25 / 08 / 47 / 828

Race 2: 34 / 16 / 87 / 29 / 43 / 08 / 5 / 25 / 47 / 828

Race 3: 34 / 29 / 16 / 43 / 47 / 87 / 08 / 25 / 5 / 828

Race 4: 29 / 34 / 43 / 08 / 87 / 47 / 828 / 16 / 5 / 25dnf

Race 5: 29 / 87 / 43 / 08 / 34 / 16 / 25 / 47 / 5 / 828dnf

Race 6: 29 / 34 / 08 / 43 / 25 / 828 / 5 / 47 / 87 / 16

(The mini-12's are in bold)

Solings:

1st Don Demeza(08) 11.25
2nd Jill Cox(16) 14.25
3rd Pat Calnan 23.0
4th Peter Easterbrook 23.0
5th John Pearson 24.0
6th Chris Wyvill 31.0

Mini-12:

1st Terry Doble (34) 10.25pts
2nd Brian Credico (29) 11.25
3rd Peter Sly(87) 18.0
4th Norm Struthers 19.0

July 20: Very nice wind conditions at Oak Lake - for a change - but we are beginning to pick up weeds, and this is very early in the year from what we have previously experienced at Oak Lake. Perhaps we won't have to be concerned as more and more Mini-12's are appearing in the club. Peter Easterbrook showed up with a new Mini-12 - sail #62 and on channel 66.

Solings:

1 Don Demeza 14.25 pts
2 Peter Brister 14.5
3 Marg Brister 23.75
4 Chris Wyvill 24.0
5 John Pearson 28.0
6 Rob Michael 29.0
7 Pat Calnan 35.0

Chris improves with each race day experience - began today with a second. Peter Brister and I were duelling it out but we both scored a 5th so mistakes were made. Rob was sailing his Soling for the first time and learned quickly - two seconds in the last two races.

Mini-12:

1 Brian Credico 11.5 pts
2 Terry Doble 14.25
3 Peter Sly 15.75
4 Peter Easterbrook 19.0

Terry suffered a dismasting in the first race and as a result missed the first two races - almost made it up with three consecutive firsts.

July 27: Racing cancelled due to rain and thunder storm.

Solings:

Mini-12:

Aug 3 : It was a a bit tricky trying to decide whether or not to hold the races - rain in the morning - however we had a good day and the rain began again just as we were leaving.
Two new boats appeared on the scene - John Hutchings with a nicely finished Soling (sail 835 channel 71) which he worked on night and day to have ready - when John makes up his mind - things happen. The boat sailed well - John had a 3rd in the 3rd race so he knows it's just practice and no mistakes. Peter Easterbrook introduced his new Mini-12 to the race circuit (sail 62 channel 66) and managed a 3rd in the 5th race - nice going fellows.

Solings:
1. Jill Cox 11.25 pts
2. Peter Brister 17.0
3. Don Demeza 17.5
4. Pat Calnan 28.0
5. Chris Wyvill 28.75
6. John Hutchings 36.0
7. Rob Michael 36.0
8. Marg Brister 47.0

John and Rob tied but John had a 3rd - Marg has been doing well but today battery problems resulted in three DNS's and that's a big penalty

Mini-12:

1. Brian Credico 11.5
2. Peter Sly 14.75
3. Terry Doble 14.75
4. Norm Struthers 25.0
5. Peter Easterbrook 25.0

Norm and Peter tied, however, Norm managed a 2nd and Peter's best was a 3rd.

August 10 : It was a windy and uncertain day, however, five boats showed up to race. There was some doubt so I tried my Soling and it was able to handle the wind. John Hutchings had the only other Soling - we tried a race but the wind was too strong for John's experience level so he decided to practice sailing under such conditions and I raced with the Mini-12's just for the fun of it - I raced with the three Mini-12's for four races - managed one second and three 3rds - it was pretty wild at times.

The Mini-12's handle very well in high winds - their long keel keeps them tracking right through the gusts. They were on the water for six straight races. Peter's batteries died for race 6. Brian's Mini 12 was near failure after the hour of straight sailing. The mast screw had turned so the stays were very loose and the boat was half full of water from all the "submarining" that happened in the high winds.

We were finished in an hour and none too soon as the wind promptly became impossible.

This is quite a year to say the least.

Solings:

No racing

Mini-12:

1. Brian Credico 8.25 pts
2. Peter Sly 10.25 pts
3. Norm Struthers 17.0 pts

There were some strange situations - a boat could have a long lead and then go into irons while everyone passed. If mistakes were given high marks then Norm Struthers would have scored 100 on the second race - he had a long lead (his two oponents were just coming around the last mark) - guess Norm got excited - just couldn't handle a first so he failed to go between the finish marks (just outside). By the time he had unwound the string and moved his boat over a foot - game over - another third. Everyone was rooting for Norm and he bore down on the finish for a first that was not to be.

August 17 : Great winds coming mostly onshore resulted in a first mark directly off shore - depth of field problem meant that many times vessels turned short of the mark.

Congratulations to Peter Easterbrook for managing a first in the sixth race. Also to John Hutchings, our newest member, for scoring not only a first but a second and three thirds. He just missed out on at least one other race when he lost it for a few seconds approaching the third mark (I remember this one as John was passing me at the time).

This was the last race day of the Summer Series so next week we head into the Fall Series of 8 race days. We will race next week at Oak Lake and I will check with the Salvation Army Camp to ensure our welcome and also to set the first day at Roblin Lake - stay tuned

Solings:

1. Don Demeza 5.75 pts
2. John Hutchings 15.75
3. Marg Brister 19.0
4. Peter Brister 22.0
5. Chris Wyvill 26.0

Chris did not race the last 3 because his mainsheet snapped and the gooseneck fitting pulled out of the mast! Gear failures slow you down!

Mini-12:

1. Brian Credico 10.0 pts
2. Peter Sly 14.75
3. Peter Easterbrook 15.75
4. Norm Struthers 18.0

2004 Fall Series

August 24: First race with all Soling fleet.... no Mini 12s.
Winds were OK, but could not race the Solings as there were just too many floating weeds. Tried three races and each time all the boats picked up weeds and some had difficulty just making it back to the dock to clear the weed.

Decided to cancell the racing and ignore the results.

We either need everyone sailing Mini 12s or a Fall venue that does not have too many weeds. Although not ideal, we'll try back at BQYC for next week.

We tried to race but it was just total frustration due to all the floating weeds about.

  August 31: Venue is BQYC.
Well we thought it would work out but in the end I guess the weeds won. The entire group of 11 competitors were very patient and held out through 7 races despite the dragging of five foot long weeds and sitting in a weed patch until the wind cleared the boat. Marg Brister is to be congratulated as she consistently managed a good race - nice going Marg.

1. Marg Brister 18.75 pts
2. Brian Credico 21.5
3. Terry Doble 22.25
4. Peter Brister 23.75
5. Peter Sly 26.0
6. John Hutchings 32.0
7. Peter Easterbrook 32.0
8. Pat Calnan 38.0
9. Don Demeza 43.0
10 Rob Michael 46.0
11 Chris Wyvill 58.0
We raced 7 races instead of the usual 6 because we needed one each race as scorekeeper. Those who did not score and raced all 7 had their highest score dropped.

I think it is becoming clear that we will race Solings in the beginning of the year and Mini-12's during the Fall weed time.

September 7 cancelled due to high winds

September 14:An excellent race day - our first at "The Lake on the Mountain" - 9 Solings, so we took turns scoring and ran 7 races - best 6 to count. It was a pleasure to not check for weeds during an entire afternoon.

Many thanks to the Lake on the Mountain Resort for providing the facilities including the mark set boat. This resort is a great spot to send a couple of days or a week in the heart of the County. Call Gilles or Joan at: 613-476-1321 for information.

Here are the results:

1. Brian Credico 12.25pts
2. Don Demeza 18.0
3. Peter Sly 22.5
4. Peter Easterbrook 25.0
5. John Hutchings 25.75
6. Pat Calnan 27.0
7. Terry Doble 31.75
8. Peter Brister 32.0
9. Rob Michael 44.0

Congratulations to Peter Easterbrook for one second and two thirds - Also to John for nailing a first in the last race. Terry managed to run into the raft and dismast his boat before the first race - didn't join us until the fourth race and immediately scored a first and two seconds.

Chris also launched his new Mini 12 for the first time. it looked and sailed beautifully! A mast stay swag gave out after a bit, but an easy repair and Chris is good to go for next season!

September 21 Excellent conditions at Lake on the Mountain and had eight boats out. Light SW wind, that built a bit as the racing progressed, and sunny skies.

The winds were steady and here we see the concentration of four of the racers.

Results:

1. Peter Easterbrook 12.5 pts
2. Brian Credico 15.75
3. Terry Doble 16.25
4. Peter Brister 19.75
5. Marg Brister 20.0
6. Pat Calnan 29.0
7. Norm Struthers 38.0
8. Peter Sly 45.0

Congratulations to Peter Easterbrook - he's been working his way to the top all year and had a clear victory with two firsts and two seconds. Peter Sly had a bad day with equipment failure - that will be a throw away day Peter.

Getting Ready for the start

Close mark rounding.

September 28: Very strange race yesterday - off shore winds which as Brian says - "seem to be circular" - sometimes a tack but could be a run on the same heading. A real challenge requiring a close watch on the sails all of the time and under these conditions Terry demonstrates that he is conistently better at this than any off us - nice going Terry - we will be rooting for you at the next Mini-12 regatta

1st Terry Doble 10.25
2 Peter Brister 21.5
3 Don Demeza 22.75
4 Brian Credico 36.0
5 Peter Easterbrook 39.0
6 John Hutchings 39.0
7 Marg Brister 41.0
8 Peter Sly 42.0
9 Pat Calnan 46.0
10 Norm Struthers 48.0
11 Rob Michael 49.0

Peter and John were tied, however, place 2nd in the 2nd race so this gave him the lead position.

October 5: Light and flukey winds but as we were packing up at 3.00 p.m. the winds came up just as Brian had predicted earlier.

The Lake on the Mountain is proving to be an excellent site. For the last two race days we have had a start line parallel to the shore - it's amazing how 9 boats can be kept out of each others way in the narrow space between the start line and the shore - all because we have perfect visibility and low winds

Don is happy. That's Brian's Soling in the background as he does RC and takes photos.

Marg is calm.

1 Terry Doble 8.25 pts
2 Peter Brister 17.75
3 Don Demeza 20.0
4 Marg Brister 26.0
5 Peter Easterbrook 29.0
6 Brian Credico 30.75
7 Peter Sly 33.0
8 Jill Cox 33.75
9 John Hutchings 43.75

John was doing well with a first in the third race and then experienced a rudder failure which he was unable to repair.

Intense.

Light wind starts

October 12: The sun was warm but the winds were again flukey and off-shore. We had an excellent turnout
1 Terry Doble 12.5 pts
2 Jill Cox 20.75
3 John Hutchings 23.0
4 Brian Credico 24.5
5 Peter Easterbrook 24.75
6 Peter Brister 29.75
7 Pat Calnan 35.0
8 Peter Sly 35.0
9 Marg Brister 36.0
10 Rob Michael 53.0
11 Chris Wyvill 56.0

Congratulations to John - consistent racing for the day provided a third
Pat's best was a 3rd so it broke the tie with Peter
The firsts were well distributed

Final Fall 2004 Results

Well, here it is - what we've been working towards all Fall

For the benefit of new members - here's how the scoring works:

- Each individual race day points are the result of .75 for a first, 2 for a second, 3 for a third etc.

- The total points at the end of each race day are divided by the number of boats racing that day so that the score carried forward to the end of the series doesn't depend on the number of boats racing on any particular day.

- During this series we only raced on 6 of the race days - we count your best four scores (so an advantage to racing every race day as you get to throw out some of the bad days). If you did not race at least four days then we add in a default score for each of the number of days you need to score four days. The default score was 5.0. The result is to two decimal places and I simply drop the decimals.

Simple isn't it - here's how it worked out for the Fall Series - Solings:
1 Terry Doble 513pts
2 Brian Credico 870
3 Peter Brister 876

4 Peter Easterbrook 1035
5 Don Demeza 1084
6 Marg Brister 1086
7 John Hutchings 1226
8 Peter Sly 1258
9 Pat Calnan 1429
10 Jill Cox 1582
11 Norm Struthers 1911
12 Rob Michael 1985
13 Chris Wyvill 2140
We are fortunate to have a couple of members who are consistently at the top of the list and who are always willing to spend time with those who would like to improve their skills, either in boat maintenance, boat trim or sailing techniques. I would suggest that new members or those who would like to improve their sailing, to take advantage of the skills within the club membership.

Congratulations to John Hutchings, who, as a new member this year is making his mark by increasingly consistent sailing.

I know what it feels like to be at the end of the pack - I held that position for a few years until I discovered what a little more attention to detail could produce.

It was a great series and we all had fun and that is really what it is all about.

2004 Founder's Trophy

October 19, Final Regatta, Founder's Trophy:
We had nine Solings out for the Founder's Trophy. Ken also showed up to watch.

The winds were strong from the NE, i.e.offshore, with the result that the winds were gusty and circular. Took a lot of concentration to keep a boat moving as winds would shift 180 degrees over a few feet. But at least there was wind. Only Peter Sly had equipment problems.

We all agreed to do eight races and have best of six count (two throw-aways). Peter Cox, who was not racing, did all the RC work so everyone had the opportunity to race 8 races.

Final Results, with drops:

1 Brian Credico 8.25 pts
2 Terry Doble 12.5
3 Peter Brister 13.5

4 John Hutchings 19.75
5 Rob Michael 29.0
6 Peter Easterbrook 29.0
7 Chris Wyvill 35.0
8 Jill Cox 36.0
9 Peter Sly 47.0

Rob and Peter tied - both had a single third but Rob had two fourths against Peter's one to break the tie listing.

2004 Awards and Club Championships Dinner

The 2004 QMYC Awards Luncheon presented a grand total of 27 trophies and plaques to the intrepid Soling One Meter and Mini 12 racers. The celebration was well represented with most QMYC members and spouses or guests. Besides the excellent food and wine at Isaih Tubbs Resort, West Lake in Prince Edward County, there was good company, conversation and congratulations to both the racers and organizers

QMYC runs club Spring, Summer and Fall series regattas, as well as the final Founder’s Trophy regatta. The Soling One Meter class is represented in all regattas while the Mini 12 was included in the Spring and Summer series.
