BQYC - Sail Past – Saturday, June 18, 2016

The "reviewing of the fleet" is based on more than 600 years of Royal Navy tradition and protocol demanded that a flagship be anchored with the Admiral and his staff on the quarterdeck to receive and return the salute of each passing ship. Vessels sailed past, dipping their colours in salute, with the captain also saluting while the ship’s company was standing at attention along the rail. The Vice Admiral would lead the fleet passing in review and the final vessel in line would carry the Rear Admiral.

The Sail Past tradition as we know it today, began at the Cowes Yacht Club formed in England nearly 200 years ago. This first yacht club was later renamed the Royal Yacht Squadron and their members were quite familiar with naval practice and so the Yacht Club tradition began except that the salute is now received by the Commodore instead of the Admiral.
